Michael Nutter used one of his first official public appearances today as mayor to promote the annual day of service to honor Martin Luther King. Monday, January 21st is the federal holiday for Dr. King.

That day, thousands of young people and adults are expected to work on community service projects for the 13th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service.

The event includes Philadelphia and its suburbs, as well as communities in Delaware and New Jersey.

It has traditionally been the nation's largest volunteer effort on the King holiday.

Last year 55-thousand people took part.

Other elected officials, community, religious and corporate leaders and students from Philadelphia area public, private and parochial schools, were on hand for the promotional event today at the National Constitution Center.
