Jury deadlocked in Milton Street trial

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - February 21, 2008

The older brother of former Philadelphia Mayor John Street faces nine charges in the fraud and tax evasion trial. Jurors told a federal judge Thursday afternoon that they couldn't reach a unanimous verdict on seven of those nine charges. The judge didn't declare a mistrial and told jurors to continue discussing the case.

On Thursday morning, jurors sent the judge a note containing three questions that the judge described as thoughtful and "very subtle." Among other things, jurors asked the judge to repeat the legal definition of the word "scheme."
