Army Corps to restrict traffic on Del. bridge

The Army Corps of Engineers plans to impose lane and weight restriction on the old Saint Georges bridge across the Chesapeake and Delaware canal. The Corps said Friday that a recent inspection found concrete surface cracks and rebar corrosion in several piers, along with several highly corroded and failing bearings under the bridge deck.

The Corps said the problems do not represent an immediate danger, but that lane and weight restrictions will provide an extra safety measure until repairs can be made.

Officials said both outside lanes on the bridge will be closed starting Tuesday, limiting traffic to one lane in each direction, and that traffic will be restricted to vehicles weighing less than 15 tons. Repairs are tentatively scheduled to be made by the end of the year.
