STRAWBERRY MANSION - August 29, 2008 - Police say the shooting happened just after 6:00 p.m. Friday outside the VFW Post 6700 at 2033 North 33rd Street.

A 77 year old man was out talking to a 78 year old man when three men approached them. Investigators say one of them pushed the victim against the wall in what authorities believe was a robbery attempt. At some point the 77 year old man was shot in the head.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say the victm was a veteran.

The killers ran away eastbound on Fontaine. The murder happened as members of the post, many of them elderly, were attending a social gathering.

Police say the victim was not a member of the post, but was there visiting other veterans. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, who joined investigators at the crime scene was disturbed over the killing.

"Anytime you have someone on an open porch and is approached by individuals and shot and killed is something you're very concerned about, and certainly the age of the individual heightens that anxiety and fear people have," Chief Ramsey said.

Police have not yet released the victims name.
