Pittsburgh drops out of Army-Navy game race

PITTSBURGH (AP) - December 19, 2008

Craig Davis, a vice president of VisitPittsburgh, has told the service academies the city can't play host to the game. VisitPittsburgh is the promotional agency of Allegheny County.

The academies have been soliciting bids from several metro areas to host the annual game. The schools began playing in 1890 and 81 of those games have been played in Philadelphia, which is about 2½ hours from each campus.

Pittsburgh-area officials were concerned about wear and tear of the turf at Heinz Field, home to the Pitt Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. The field's condition is often poor in December, when the Army-Navy game is played, and adding another game would only make it worse.
