8-year-old spent 10 days with dead mom

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - January 20, 2009 Police say the woman apparently died Jan. 9 in their apartment in the Detroit suburb of Romulus, and the boy survived by himself by eating dried rice, butter and flour.

WXYZ-TV reports that no one knew about the woman's death until after the boy ventured outside on Monday to buy snacks.

Romulus police Lt. John Leacher told The Detroit News the boy attracted attention because he tried to use his mother's expired credit card. He said the boy didn't seek help because he was scared.

Police say no foul play was suspected in the woman's death.
