Lockdown over, students dismissed

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 18, 2009 - The schools were Barry Elementary School, Daroff Elementary School, Bluford Elementary School and Bryant Academic Charter School.

The students were dismissed sometime after 4:00 p.m.

The schools were locked down because, police say, a shooting suspect barricaded himself inside a home in the unit block of N. Salford St. at around 1:31 p.m.

The shooting happened in the 7500 block of Lansdowne Avenue around 12:50 p.m.

Police believe the man shot a 26-year-old woman multiple times in the chest, back and arm in the city's Overbrook Park section before fleeing to the West Philadelphia home.

The home the man is barricaded inside may contain hand grendades or other explosives.

There is no word yet on what the motive was behind the initial shooting or the relationship between the man and the victim.
