Penn Wood takes 1st AAAA title

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - March 21, 2009 Aaron Brown scored 20 points and Duane Johnson had 20 and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Patriots claimed their first Class AAAA championship with a 72-53 win Saturday night over York-William Penn at the Jordan Center.

The final game of the state basketball playoffs turned into a coronation for the hardwood heavyweights from the Delaware Valley.

Jevaughn Murphy's 17 points led the Bearcats (32-2), who briefly recovered from a 10-point deficit in the first quarter to get within two in the second.

But Penn Wood (28-5) pulled away again behind a roster stocked with lean, athletic slashers and pesky defenders.

Will Brown's 3 to beat the third-quarter buzzer gave them a 15-point lead which swelled to 24 by midway through the fourth.

Mlachi Leonard added 14 points for York.
