Teen girl killed in drive-by shooting

TRENTON, N.J. - June 8, 2009 - The girl is identified as Tamrah Leonard, 13.

It happened as residents gathered for a campaign block party for the youth minister of the New Black Panther party.

Somebody in a passing vehicle sprayed the area with bullets, hitting Leonard.

She was walking about six blocks from one aunt's house to another aunt's home to meet her mother, when she detoured through Martin Luther King Boulevard.

It was about 6:30, and a block party sponsored by city council hopeful Divine Allah was in full swing, when two cars pulled up and gunfire erupted.

"They just did a random drive by indiscriminately. They didn't care who they shot," said Police Director Irving Bradley, Jr.

Police suspect it was gang members seeking revenge after a dispute and shooting at an area club Saturday night. Investigators believe rival gang members were thought to hang out in the area.

Tamrah Leonard was a 7th grader at Monument Elementary School. She was a a dancer, cheerleader, honor roll student and an budding entreprenuer... a candy broker of sorts to friends.

Recently two of her classmates' parents were killed, and losing Tamrah opens painful wounds for them.

"She was well loved at that school, and as I walked through the building... nothing but tears from students to adults," said Rodney Lofton, Superintendent of Trenton Schools.

For the kind hearted little girl's family, the flow of tears has just begun.

"She was wonderful. That's all I can say. Couldn't ask for anything better, honor roll student. She was a good girl," said Tamrah's great aunt Linda Champion.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the confidential tip line at (609) 989-3663, Crime Stoppers at (609) 278-8477 (TIPS), or email the Trenton Police Department.

There is a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.
