Zoo killer sentenced to drug court probation

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - September 4, 2009

Matthew Ronneberg of Lacey Township was ordered this week to serve five years in the program, which entails weekly court appearances and drug testing. He also must spend three months in a drug rehabilitation program.

He pleaded guilty in August to burglary and an unrelated drug offense.

Ronneberg was sent to prison in 2006 for trying to fake a drug test and violating the probation he received for killing exotic birds at the Associated Humane Societies' Popcorn Park Zoo in 2003.

Ronneberg and two others bludgeoned to death three emus, two rheas and three ducks at the zoo.
