Pa. senator told to increase, simplify college aid
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - October 6, 2009 Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania chaired the hearing
Monday afternoon at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Three students, a parent and three experts in college costs said
it's hard for families to meet the rising price of higher
education.
They encouraged Casey to expand the federal Pell Grant program
for needy students. They also said many students are discouraged by
needlessly complex financial aid forms.
The House recently passed a bill that would oust private lenders
from the student loan business and boost Pell Grants. The
legislation must still be approved by the Senate.
