NJ State Police crackdown on tailgaters

EWING TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - October 17, 2009 The two-week crackdown begins Saturday and runs through Oct. 31.

State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes says troopers will use new laser technology that calculates the time and distance between vehicles.

Sgt. Stephen Jones says following another vehicle too closely causes about one-third of the crashes on the toll roads.

Jones says in ideal conditions, motorists should maintain a distance of one car length behind another vehicle for every 10 mph they are traveling.

Violators face fines and five points assessed to their driving record.
