Dredging of Delaware River to begin without permit

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - October 25, 2009

A Corps spokesman said Saturday that the agency still intends to seek a Delaware permit. But it will start work in the meantime, using money from Pennsylvania and previously approved federal funds.

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has tried for years to push the dredging forward despite objections from Delaware and New Jersey.

Delaware officials and private environmental groups say they may file lawsuits to stop the dredging. Gov. Jack Markell says the decision by the Corps "raises significant concerns" and that the state will review its legal options.

State regulators are concerned about the environmental impact of the dredging.
