Harassed NJ mayor steps down from council

SOUTH HARRISON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - November 10, 2009

Charles Tyson announced Monday that he would leave the township council on Tuesday, in part, because he says he's worn down by racism.

Tyson had already given up his position as mayor of the town of 2,700.

Tyson says he accomplished some of his major goals, such as installing the town's first traffic light.

William White, an avowed white separatist from Virginia, has been indicted on charges that he made harassing phone calls to Tyson.
