The power was interrupted for about 40 minutes around 10 a.m. Monday.
Rick Vitelli with the city's electric department says a squirrel got into the conduit that supplies most of Newark, including the University of Delaware.
Workers were able to get most customers back online in about 20 minutes and power was restored to the rest of customers soon after that.
