Police say 51-year-old Audrey Johnson was shot while trying to break up a fight outside her family home in Brooklyn, New York.
Earlier reports indicated Johnson was married to World B. Free. However, statements from the 76ers, for whom Free is now "Ambassador of Basketball," say Free was never married to Johnson. The two had a relationship several years ago, but they haven't spoken for some time.
Investigators say two men were attacking Laguan Williams, a girlfriend of Johnson's niece.
Dectectives say Johnson did not appear to be the intended target.
