Trenton mayor will not see re-election

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - December 8, 2009

Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer announced Monday he will step down when his term ends in June, capping 20 years in office. Palmer said he wants to spend time with his wife and their 7-year-old daughter.

Palmer said he's excited to move into the next phase of his life.

Palmer was elected Trenton's first black mayor in 1990.

Mercer County Freeholder Keith Hamilton and school board member Alex Brown have declared as candidates to replace the 58-year-old.
