11 teens robbed at Roxborough rec center

ROXBOROUGH - May 30, 2010

It all started around 11:00 Saturday night in the 5800 block of Ridge Avenue at the Kendrick Recreation Center. That's where eleven teenagers were hanging out talking and playing basketball. They noticed a red Camaro drive through the parking lot with four males inside. The car left but returned a short time later. The four men armed with guns got out of the car and demanded cash, cell phones, backpacks and wallets from the teens.

A short distance away, a man and a woman were running their remote control cars on the parking lot when the men also approached them and demanded their money and cell phones before getting back into the Camaro and fleeing down Ridge Avenue.

The stunned teens with no cell phones ran down Ridge Avenue and were able to flag down a passing motorist with a phone and dialed police.

Police quickly arrived and put out a broadcast for the car involved. A short time later, plainclothes detectives spotted the vehicle in North Philadelphia and gave chase. Eventually, the Camaro stopped near 28th and Allegheny Avenue. The four suspects got out and ran with police chasing the men on foot. So far, two of the men have been caught and police are searching for two more.

The majority of the teen victims went with their parents to Northwest Detectives to give statements and claim most of their stolen items of which police recovered.

As it turns out, the suspects' Camaro was carjacked earlier in the night. There is no word on charges at this time.
