Major brush fire in southern NJ still burning

BARNEGAT, N.J. - June 27, 2010

Bert Plante, a spokesman for the state Forest Fire Service, said about 80 percent of the blaze in Barnegat had been contained by 3 p.m.

Crews were hoping to have it fully contained by late Sunday night.

Plante said as much as 900 acres could be destroyed by the fire, which started early Saturday afternoon in the Ocean County community, which is about 30 miles north of Atlantic City. No injuries have been reported, and no evacuations were needed because few people live near the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
