Nicholas Pinto kept a diary in which he claimed to have endured months of physical, sexual and mental abuse at Lackawanna County Prison. He says guards roughed him up, a fellow inmate raped him night after night, and no one did a thing about it.
Earlier this month, Pinto was heading back to his cell when he was ambushed by an inmate with a history of violence who was supposed to be locked down - but wasn't. The assault left Pinto comatose.
The prison's critics say the near-fatal attack is part of a pattern in which guards target inmates they don't like. The union denies any malice, blaming management.
