Michael Cahill is charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose. The 41-year-old's public defender told a judge his client appeared to understand the charges during a court appearance in Ocean County on Wednesday.
Cahill was arrested Tuesday after police arrived at his 65-year-old mother's Tuckerton home. Her 63-year-old boyfriend, Kenneth Robinson, was dead. Meredith Cahill remains in critical condition with multiple stab wounds.
The Asbury Park Press reports Michael Cahill was found innocent by reason of insanity in 2003 in the accidental fatal shooting of a Little Egg Harbor woman. He was released from a psychiatric hospital in 2006.
