Electrical issues force A.C. evacuations

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - January 24, 2011

The problem at the Charles P. Jefferies Towers along North Vermont Street started this morning, when people reported a strange odor in the building.

Around 5 p.m., investigators tracked the smell to an electrical problem. Workers shut off power to floors 2 through 8, forcing the residents out of their homes and to a nearby shelter.

Charles P. Jeffries Towers is owned by the Atlantic City Housing Department and is home to mostly elderly residents.

The repairs are expected to be completed tomorrow, and the residents should be allowed back in their homes.
