An elderly driver hit a pedestrian and dragged her body more than half a mile. The woman was hit near Red Hill Avenue and Interstate 5, but her body was dragged to Newport and Walnut Avenue.
Broken eyeglasses lay near a crosswalk in Tustin. About 30 feet away was the woman's running shoe, its pair sat in the middle of the street around the corner.
"We're still investigating," said Lt. Paul Garaven from Tustin police. "It appears the victim was struck by a vehicle and drug to this location. "
It is a gruesome accident where the victim's body became dislodged from the driver's car. The victim is described as an adult female. So far police do not know who she is.
The incident happened before noon. Investigators are trying to determine if weather played a factor.
"At the time of the collision it was raining very heavy," said Garaven.
"It was really bad," said Tustin resident Kimberly Wilson. "I couldn't even see out of my driver's window because the rain was coming so bad, to see traffic coming this way. And my windows were fogging up even though I had the defrost on and heater. I just turned around and went home, it was bad."
Police said the driver, described as an elderly woman, still kept going a few more lights until she pulled over. Why she didn't stop when she first struck the pedestrian nearly a mile earlier isn't clear.
"I don't know," said Garaven. "The investigators are looking into that now and interviewing witnesses."
The victim has not been identified. Police are still interviewing the driver of the car. She is a 79-year-old resident of Aliso Viejo. So far she is not facing any charges.
