Driver charged with DUI in Del. crash

GREENVILLE, Del. - May 8, 2011

The incident occurred at approximately 3:05 p.m. as Nathaniel J. Swisher, 23, was operating a Mitsubishi Eclipse and was traveling on eastbound Campbell Road at an apparent high rate of speed.

Police say as Swisher approached traffic that was backed up on Campbell Road, he attempted to turn onto southbound Kennett Pike in an attempt to avoid striking the traffic.

Swisher, however; was unable to complete the turn successfully due to his high rate of speed and crossed Kennett Pike where his vehicle then struck a 2007 Chevrolet Trail Blazer that was stopped for a red light on northbound Kennett Pike and which was being operated by Mary Voitus, 67, of Hockessin, DE.

Nathaniel Swisher, as well as two passengers in his vehicle, were all transported from the scene by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Mary Voitus, as well as a passenger in her vehicle, were not injured.

Troopers have obtained warrants charging Nathaniel Swisher with Vehicular Assault, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Remain in a Lane of Travel. He will be arrested at a later time. This crash remains under investigation.

Greenville, Delaware was also the scene of a fatal accident where man was struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning.
