Pa. teen killed in NC while going to football camp

DURHAM, N.C. - June 24, 2011

Durham police said Friday that 22-year-old Gabriel James Gamez of San Antonio is charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Police say the players from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pa., were shot in a parking lot near a hotel where they were staying.

Cara Zanella with the Gateway School District tells ABC affiliate WTVD that Derrell Turner, a senior at Gateway High School in Monroeville, was killed. He was traveling to Florida for a 7-on-7 football tournament and was staying the night in Durham when the incident happened.

The other victim, who was shot in the leg, was his teammate Thomas Woodson.

Gamez was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. Friday at a hotel where he was staying. He's being held in the Durham County Jail without bond, and it's not clear if he has an attorney.

Authorities say the shooting happened after an apparent altercation in a parking lot on McFarland Drive. They say Gamez and the teens did not know each other.

Gamez is no stranger to the law. WTVD reports he currently is scheduled to be in court on July 19 for a theft charge, according to the Bexar County Clerk of Court in Texas.
