Cold water blamed for NJ fish kill

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - August 24, 2011

Lake Lenape in Atlantic County rose about 2 feet higher than normal late last week because of heavy rainfall.

Emergency management coordinator Vince Jones told The Press of Atlantic City hundreds of small shad died because the lake received excess water from the Great Egg Harbor River and the fish couldn't adapt to the colder water.

Officials also are preparing for more rain this week from Hurricane Irene.
