Annual toy run back on with new additions

UNIVERSITY CITY - November 1, 2011

The toy run involving thousands of motorcyclists will take place on Sunday, November 6th.

It will begin from Delaware Avenue and Spring Garden Street to the S and T lots on the West side of Citizens Bank Park. Line up begins at 9:00 a.m. and run leaves at noon.

Toys dropped off at the park will be collected by Drexel University for distribution as part of its annual Holiday Toy Drive. Drexel University has been conducting an annual Holiday Toy Drive to collect and distribute toys to needy Philadelphia children since 1996.

A smaller contingent of motorcycles will then proceed from Citizens Bank Park to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for presentation to patients and medical staff.

A statement issued by Congressman Bob Brady's office Tuesday afternoon reads, "The new routing scheme reflects the need to maintain uninhibited access to CHOP for its patients and emergency medical vehicles - access that had become compromised with the success of the Toy Drive and the thousands of motorcycles it brought onto Civic Center Boulevard in recent years."

The annual A.B.A.T.E. motorcycle toy run was in jeopardy after CHOP said traffic congestion and toy storage became overwhelming.

That is when Congressman Brady stepped in and said not so fast.

"And we will figure out that logistics and make sure that it happens and it will happen," Brady told Action News last week.

Now on Sunday, the toy run will be celebrating its 31st year.
