Names of war dead are being read on campuses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - November 11, 2011

The idea for the commemoration started at Eastern Kentucky University, where students began reading the names of the fallen at 6 a.m. The remembrance is being duplicated on 182 other college campuses across the U.S.

National Roll Call coordinator Brett Morris says the names of the U.S. military casualties are being read more than one million times collectively during the day. Morris, who is EKU's associate director for veterans affairs, says since there's no memorial for the soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the roll call is a way to recognize their service.
