Myanmar's government has welcomed the appearance of two white elephants, traditional symbols of power and prosperity.

The state-run Myanma Ahlin newspaper reported Monday that the two pachyderms were feted at a lavish reception led by Vice President Sai Mauk Kham.

Government newspapers noted that an "improvement in the country's foreign relations" took place at the same time the animals were found. Myanmar last week was awarded the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2014, and the United States announced that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will visit after years of frosty relations.
