It happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. near the Stewart Avenue interchange of the highway.
Initial reports indicate that the officer's police cruiser collided with at least one other vehicle.
A number of ambulances were called to the scene. No word on the extent of the other injuries.
All southbound lanes of the highway were shutdown for several minutes but they have since reopened.
No word what sparked the crash.
