3 injured in police K-9 cruiser accident

EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. - April 24, 2012

The accident occurred at 8:12 p.m. at the intersection of Mill Road and Fernwood Avenue in the Bargaintown section of Egg Harbor Township.

35-year-old K-9 Officer William Reed of Egg Harbor Township was traveling west on Mill Road in his K-9 patrol vehicle when a Lexus, proceeding north on Fernwood Avenue, failed to yield at the stop sign and traveled directly into Reed's path.

Officer Reed's 2006 Ford collided with the 2006 Lexus at the intersection. The crash sent the cruiser off the roadway and into a wooded area.

Ofc. Reed was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where he remains for further evaluation. The extent of his injuries are unknown. His K-9 partner, Santino, was checked at the scene and appeard to be unharmed.

The 17-year-old male driver of the Lexus and his passenger were taken to Shore Medical Center for moderate injuries. The driver was issued summons for being an Unlicensed Driver, Careless Driving and Failure to Observe a Stop Sign.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
