Deep sinkhole opens in yard of historic Bucks home

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - June 4, 2012

Helen Aldredge told Action News that a neighbor first noticed the hole on Saturday.

It opened up next to the sidewalk on one corner of her property on Church Street.

The hole, which is connected to a deep cistern or well that may have been built many years ago, has swallowed up two shrubs since Saturday and appears to be growing in the direction of the house, Aldredge said.

The house was built in 1833 and is on a list of homes included in the Bucks Beautiful Garden Tours.

Borough officials have placed caution tape around the sinkhole and continue to monitor the situation, said Aldredge.
