The fire broke out at a housing complex shortly after noon at the intersection of Benson and South 30th streets.
Fire crews rescued one woman from the building who was then transported to Cooper University Hospital with severe smoke inhalation.
Crews were able to gain the upper hand about 20 minutes later and placed the fire under control.
There were no other injuries reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
