Pa. death-row inmate fights upcoming execution

PHILADELPHIA - August 10, 2012

Lawyers for 46-year-old Terrance Williams are fighting the scheduled Oct. 3 execution. He's on death row for fatally beating a man with a tire iron in 1984.

Public defender Shawn Nolan says there's new evidence that victim Amos Norwood had molested Williams. Nolan also says jurors mistakenly thought Williams would have been paroled if given a life sentence.

The last three executions in Pennsylvania, all in the 1990s, involved inmates who had abandoned their legal fight and asked to be executed.

Williams has exhausted his appeals, but hopes for a reprieve from the courts or governor.

He is also serving a life sentence for a second slaying.
