Woman admits stealing $300k from cancer patient

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - December 11, 2012

Sixty-five-year-old Virginia Marquardt told a Bucks County judge on Monday that she swiped the money from her cancer-stricken neighbor to prop up her husband's businesses, where she was the bookkeeper.

Marquardt, of Bensalem, pleaded guilty in September to theft charges for taking money she was entrusted with after her 67-year-old neighbor was admitted to a nursing home because of complications from brain cancer.

The Bucks County Courier Times reports Marquardt said she didn't want to tell her husband his ventures weren't making money.

The fraud was discovered after officials say Marquardt stopped paying the neighbor's nursing home bills. She was sentenced to house arrest and ordered to make restitution.
