The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Ringgold Street.
Police are trying to determine if an argument caused a gunman to open fire on two men.
A 35-year-old man was shot several times in the back and pronounced dead a short time later.
A 22-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is listed in critical condition.
Police say at least nine shots were fired from one weapon.
The victims' names have not been released.
