It happened around 9:30 Saturday night on Stanton Ogletown Road and Old Churchman's Road in Christiana.
Police say 41-year-old Charles Gardner was walking from the median on Route 4 when he stepped into the path of an oncoming car and was hit.
Gardner was taken to Christiana Hosptial in critical condition.
Authorities say a second vehicle may have also struck the victim.
The accident remains under investigation.
