The incident happened just past 1:00 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Route 1 at Washington Road.
Police say the truck struck the back of a vehicle then hit the concrete median and flipped onto its side, damaging a traffic signal.
The truck was loaded with hot asphalt that spilled onto the roadway.
The impact of the crash caused the car that was struck to travel into a nearby gas station and hit a car being refueled. The truck driver suffered minor neck pain. No other injuries were reported.
Route 1 South was closed for about 7 hours as crews worked to clear scene, remove the spilled asphalt, which had begun to harden, and repair the damaged traffic signal.
