The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. Thursday as officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Mill Road and Darmstadt Avenue.
Officials say a Mullica Township police officer discharged his service weapon following an incident involving a male suspect.
There is no word if the motorist was hit.
The suspect then fled in the vehicle described as a red Kia.
A short time later, the suspect abandoned the vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Galloway Township.
Police are currently searching for the man in Mullica Township and neighboring communities.
