Toms River couple charged in infant's death

TOMS RIVER, N.J. - February 18, 2014

32-year-old Giovanna Rojas and 37-year-old Michael Rojas of Toms River were arrested Friday and charged with one count of First Degree Aggravated Manslaughter and Second Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

It was approximately 10:38 p.m. back on August 27th when Giovanna and Michael Rojas arrived at the Community Medical Center in Toms River with their baby girl, identified by authorities as "J.R.".

Hospital staff quickly determined the child was not breathing and attempted to revive the girl.

J.R. was then transferred to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she later died.

A post mortem exam of J.R. determined the cause of death to be exsanguination and compression trauma of the chest and abdomen, and the manner of death was determined to be homicide.

Giovanna Rojas is being held in the Ocean County Jail in default of $200,000 cash only bail, and Michael Rojas is being held in the Ocean County Jail in default of $250,000 cash only bail.
