An Upper Darby police officer has been arrested and charged with DUI after a hit-and-run accident earlier this week.

The crash happened Tuesday around 10:00 p.m. along West Chester Pike in Marple Township.

Police say 43-year-old Officer William Tobin has been charged.

According to authorities, Ofc. Tobin struck another vehicle and fled the scene.

No one was injured but the driver followed Tobin then called police to report his location. He was quickly apprehended and taken into custody.

Action News reached out to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Supt. Chitwood says the department has been made aware of the arrest. He added that Tobin had been out of work for several months after getting injured in the line of duty.

Supt. Chitwood says an internal investigation is underway.

Meanwhile Marple Township police say Tobin was arraigned and released on bail.
