Bookies take a bath
LAS VEGAS (AP) - February 6, 2008 The Nevada sports books also took a bath. The casinos
report losing a record 2.6 million dollars on Super Bowl bets, when
the New York Giants upset the Patriots Sunday. It's the first time
the sports books lost money since the 1995 Super Bowl, when the San
Francisco 49ers blew out the San Diego Chargers. But the loss then
was 400-grand, total. Officials of the Nevada Gaming Control Board
report the sports books lost big on bets the Giants would win
straight up. Those bets paid off as much as four-to-one because the
Patriots were such heavy favorites. As just about everyone knows,
the underdog Giants beat the Patriots 17-14.
