DUI Arrests after SUV crashes through cemetery

JUNIATA PARK - February7, 2008

Detectives armed with flashlights scoured the Greenmount Cemetery trying to assess the damage allegedly caused by a Dodge Durango.

Shattered tombstones and uprooted flowers littered the grounds.

Ernestine Vega, 25, was riding in the vehicle driven by Kisha Carthon, 21, according to police. They are both charged with conspiracy, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, institutional vandalism, and driving under the influence.

"The female driver of the vehicle appeared impaired with alcohol or some other substance," said Inspector Scott Small.

The woman was taken into custody along with two others. It's unclear why they were at the cemetery.

They may have gotten away if detectives with the Major Crimes Unit were not conducting an investigation nearby. They heard the accident.

"The detectives immediately got in their vehicles and came here and they found the Dodge Durango," said Small.

Blood tests were pending on the driver. Police said the owner of the sports utility vehicle, who was not driving but inside vehicle, could also face charges.

Damages are estimated at $100,000.
