Deputies fired for computer use

READING, Pa. (AP) - March 7, 2008 Sheriff Eric Weaknecht declines to identify the seven, but says he hopes to replace them soon. The office has 84 deputies, who provide courtroom security, serve warrants, and transport prisoners.

County Administrator William Dennis confirms the deputies were fired for violating policy against personal use of e-mail and the Internet on the job.

Berks County human resources director Beth Schiepan says taxpayers pay for the county computers and employees can do their personal business at home.
