Park named for soldier killed in Iraq

RICHBORO, Pa. (AP) - March 13, 2008 Township supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to rename the Northampton Commons park in the Richboro section in honor of Army Pfc. Robert Dembowski Jr.

Authorities say Dembowski was killed in May 2007 by enemy small arms fire in Baghdad. Officials say he was the first Northampton Township resident killed in Iraq.

The soldier's mother, Fran Dembowski, watched the supervisors approve the name change online at her home. Then she rushed to the township building and thanked the board during the public comment section of the meeting.

Fran Dembowski fought back tears and told how moved she was by the decision. The crowd stood and applauded. And she said, "It's like Bobby came home."
