Special eggs for Easter

NORTHERN LIBERTIES The little shop specializes in pysanky, or Ukrainian easter eggs. These are not the hard-boiled variety you find in some families.

The lines and symbols on the eggs have meaning. A circle, for example, is for eternity.

The artist marks the shell with wax, and then the egg is dipped into dye, starting with the lightest color. Waxing and dyeing continue until the design is complete.

The shop also sells finished eggs, some painted with religious portraits instead of symbols. And larger shells, including goose and ostrich eggs, are also available. There are even eggs for families with small children.

Hanusey's Music and Gifts is located at 244 West Girard Avenue in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. They are open Tuesday through Saturday. The store offers pysanky supplies year-round.
