For 70 years, the Califon Firemen's Carnival has drawn people from throughout the region for games, rides and food.
But the state Department of Community Affairs says the firefighters don't have a fire suppression system in sheds where burgers and hot dogs are cooked. The dispute has been smoldering since 2003.
The fire company says installing hoods, ducts and filters like those found at restaurants would cost $75,000 and wipe out most of its $120,000 annual budget. The carnival takes in about $25,000 a year.
The firefighters will continue to contest the violation notices.
