Unclaimed stimulus checks piling up

More than 150,000 New Jerseyans have failed to apply for $47 million in federal economic stimulus checks.

Anyone who filed a 2007 tax return qualified for up to $600 for individuals and $1,2000 for a married couple filing jointly. Many parents receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child.

The Garden State ranks 10th in the nation in unclaimed payments.

Essex County has the state's most unclaimed payments, 17,218. Bergen County is second and Ocean County is third.

The Internal Revenue Service says the deadline to apply is Oct. 15.
