Keys left in lock lead to arrest

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (AP) - February 9, 2009

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says police were stumped at first about the theft of about $400,000 worth of drugs on Monday. He says the burglar disabled the alarm and surveillance systems.

But on Friday, police arrested a 43-year-old repeat offender Thomas Ferkler. Chitwood says a neighbor saw the keys left in the trunk for a few days and notified police. When police checked out the situation, they found stolen drugs in the trunk and a gym bag with the suspect's name and address.

As Chitwood told reporters Sunday: "Score one for the Upper Darby Police Department vs. Stupidity."
