Nurse-Midwives can now prescribe meds

Harrisburg, Pa. - April 10, 2009 A new law that took effect this month ends Pennsylvania's status as the only state that withheld that authority from nurse-midwives.

There are about 330 nurse-midwives in the state. In order to write prescriptions, nurse-midwives will need a master's degree or the equivalent, national certification, as well as ongoing training in pharmacology.

The law also allows nurse-midwives to prescribe medical devices, immunizing agents and laboratory tests.

The Legislature passed the law in 2007, but it required regulatory reviews before it could take effect.
